Day 202: Needle and the damage done, Neil Young

Another one from my musical centre. Neil Young music is like an old friend to me. This song is particularly poignant especially since my first job was working in a drug and alcohol unit at Westmead hospital. It was there I began to understand the complexities of drug addiction especially addiction to heroin.

Day 201: Wuthering Heights, Kate Bush

This week I am returning to what I would call my musical centre. There are few people and groups that really dominate my collection and Kate definitely is in there. This really was the song that launched her long and distinguished career. An amazing and let’s not be honest about it, an absolutely stunning woman.

Day 200: Take the Long way home, Supertramp

So we hit the day 200 mark of Covid Island Discs. The very first song I posted on facebook back on the 27th of March 2020 was Hide in Your Shell by Supertramp. So it seems only appropriate to post another Supertramp song as I would have said at the tender age of 18 that they were my all time favourite band. Just remember, “when you go home tonight you must take the long way home.”

Day 199: On the turning away, Pink Floyd

So last week I posted a song from Pink Floyd’s album a momentary lapse of reason called learning to fly. This song is from the same album which was published after Roger Waters left the band. I was very fortunate to see Pink Floyd just after this album was released and it was definitely one of the best concerts I have ever seen. The lighting show was truly out of this world. This particular song not only supports a lovely tune but attempts to appeal to our better natures as we witness the immense suffering of the millions in this world who are not as fortunate as ourselves.

Day 197: Your Song by Elton John

Yep time for some more Elton John. I think this is one of his most prettiest songs and this clip is recorded before his voice was destroyed by singer’s node in the 80s.
