So over the next few days I am going to publish songs that were released in years that are currently empty in my Covid Island Disc collection. Up until today, there were no songs for 2010. In order to find a song that was published in 2010 I went to The magazine and looked up the top 50 songs for 2010. The magazine rated this song at number 9. On first listening, I wasn’t that impressed but the song did quickly grow on me and it has a great video to accompany the music.

Therefore I was rather pleased to find the latest Foo Fighter song release on Youtube which was only released 11 days from when I am writing this blog (15 days at this blog publication date). It is great to see (what I would call a classic rock band) actively producing new music and this song is particularly good in my opinion.

I really like the musical progression of this song as it asks the question is “there more to this than that?” Another song that mirrors the existential angst of humanity as we walk this strange path of what we call life.

Update 25^th March 2022: On this day the drummer of Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins passed away from what looks like a cardiac infarction. Sadly Taylor struggled with addiction issues and the toxicology report stated that "Hawkins had ten substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis" (Wikipedia). Sadly another rock & roll artist who was tortured by his demons and died way too young (he had only turned 50 in February). RIP Taylor!

Like the opening of Ecclesiates, “Nothing ever happens” also has some really great poetry in it. I particularly like these lines from the song:

And bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While “Angry from Manchester” writes to complain about all the repeats on TV
Computer terminals report some gains in the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing.

What I mean by this is the interesting idea of how in one context a person can appear to be someone who has something valuable to contribute but in other people’s eyes they are a scoundrel. Our fictional gambler character on the train to nowhere helped Kenny find an ace that he could keep but as an acquaintance of Bob he is just a guy who never changes his bad gambling habits.

Sadly, the unintended consequence of this military action was the rise of Khmer Rouge which in 1970 resulted in what is described in the Wiki article as follows:

By late March 1970, Cambodia had descended into anarchy as Karnow noted: Rival Cambodian gangs were hacking each other to pieces, in some instances celebrating their prowess by eating the hearts and livers of their victims. The North Vietnamese response was swift, they began directly supplying large amounts of weapons and advisors to the Khmer Rouge and Cambodia plunged into civil war. Lon Nol saw Cambodia’s population of 400,000 ethnic Vietnamese as possible hostages to prevent PAVN attacks and ordered their roundup and internment. One hundred and forty four Cambodian soldiers and civilians then unleashed a reign of terror, murdering thousands of Vietnamese civilians. Lon Nol encouraged pogroms against the Vietnamese minority and the Cambodian police took the lead in organizing the pogroms. On 15 April for example, 800 Vietnamese men had been rounded up at the village of Churi Changwar, tied together, executed, and their bodies dumped into the Mekong River. They then floated downstream into South Vietnam. Cambodia’s actions were denounced by both the North and South Vietnamese governments.

As the lead singer of Midnight Oil Peter Garrett noted, Henry Kissinger (Nixon’s secretary of state and defence advisor) would later be awarded a Nobel Peace prize much to the chagrin of many.
