Day 441: Tainted Love, Soft Cell

Time for a trip down memory lane with this 80s rock classic. Tainted love first appeared on the Australian radio airwaves in 1981. At the time a good friend and mine were avid listeners of the Sydney radio station 2SM and this station used to produce a top 100 chart which consisted of a piece of A5 paper in different colours with a list of songs that were in the charts that week. Both of use had a great little collection of these A5 lists but sadly over the years I lost mine. I don’t think my friend ever liked this song although hearing it again after so many years did fill me with delight

Time for a bit of a meme song. This is certain one of those rock and roll classics that everyone knows yet the first time Rainbow has appeared in Covid Island Discs. Like the key change in the middle of the song.

Day 439: Lyin’ Eyes, The Eagles

Surprised I have not cited this Eagles classic before now. This song was the 5^th track on their One of these nights album and is certainly one of their classics. Apparently the inspiration for this song came about as follows:

The title and idea for the song came when Glenn Frey and Don Henley were in their favourite Los Angeles restaurant/bar Dan Tana’s which was frequented by many beautiful women, and they started talking about beautiful women who were cheating on their husbands. They saw a beautiful young woman with a fat and much older wealthy man, and Frey said: “She can’t even hide those lyin’ eyes.” (Wikipedia)

Day 438: Don’t know why I didn’t come, Norah Jones

So this song is really classic Norah Jones. This is the sort of song that you imagine putting on after a hard day at work when all you want to do is chill out and wow this song has maximum chill out factor. The piano also reminds me of the sort of song you would hear in an upmarket restaurant where there was live entertainment consisting of a pianist and a woman like Norah belting out this little number while the restaurant guests enjoy their food, wine and conversation with their fellow diners.

Day 437: Everybody’s changing, Keane

Yesterday I cited a Travis song. Not sure why but Travis and Keane always remind me of each other so I thought it was therefore time for another Keane song. This is also the second time Keane has appeared in Covid Island Discs. The last song I cited was She has no time which I think is their prettiest song. This one however is probably one of their most famous and better known I think than “She has no time”

Day 436: Sing, Travis

This is a nice little number by the band Travis. This is the second song of their to appear in Covid Island Discs. Like their video to Why does it always rain on me, this video is also very interesting. Especially like the food fight at the wedding and the “flying octopus”. Very cool!

Day 435: Crazy, Icehouse

So let’s kick of week 63 with a song from the Australian group Icehouse. The video to this song is also pretty cool although I think Iva Davies got the opening idea of his video from the horror movie Play Misty For Me. For any Sydneites out there, enjoy the scenes of our beautiful city.
