Time to end the week with this classic from Fleetwood Mac. This song of course is one of their classics from their most famous album rumours. It is kind of an oddly appropriate title given the personal shenanigans that were going on in the band when this album was recorded. Below is a little snippet from the Wiki article about the making of the Rumours album.

As the studio sessions progressed, the band members’ new intimate relationships that formed after various separations started to have a negative effect on Fleetwood Mac. The musicians did not meet or socialise after their daily work at the Record Plant. At the time, the hippie movement still affected Sausalito’s culture and drugs were readily available. Open-ended budgets enabled the band and the engineers to become self-indulgent; sleepless nights and the extensive use of cocaine marked much of the album’s production. Chris Stone, one of the Record Plant’s owners, indicated in 1997 that Fleetwood Mac brought “excess at its most excessive” by taking over the studio for long and extremely expensive sessions; he stated, “The band would come in at 7 at night, have a big feast, party till 1 or 2 in the morning, and then when they were so whacked-out they couldn’t do anything, they’d start recording”.

The band Foreigner certainly deserves its place in Covid Island Discs and have produced some really great hits over the years. This one is probably their most famous and certainly suits my musical tastes because it is so intense musically. The anger in this song reminds me a lot of the Queen hit “Death on Two Legs”.

Another great thing about this song is the piano riff which is so distinctive and probably what most people remember about this hit

This is such an utterly bizarre video in my opinion and well worth watching if you’ve never seen it. Who would have guessed that two very accomplished and famous musicians from opposite ends of the musical spectrum and from different generations would one day come together to produce this Christmas song. Like Bowie’s reference to Lennon being “an old fella”. Watching this now brings a little sadness to my heart knowing that both of them are no longer with us.

Update 31/10/2022: Unfortunately the original video posted here was taken off Youtube due to a copyright claim from Bing Crosby’s estate. I have therefore had to replace it with a video that is of much lower quality but at least it has been on Youtube for 11 years so most likely will not be removed in the near future.

Christmas Day 2022: Well it got taken down a 2nd time which is kind of odd given I would not think the major music companies would be so precious about stopping this song being played on social media but there you go. Anyway, I have updated the link once again and we will have to wait to see how long this time the link stays live.

This song makes me feel a little melancholy. One of my earliest trips to the UK was 1976 when my cousin Michael took me as a child to the Hard Rock café in London. My cousin was a full sixteen years older than me and an incredibly nice guy who had a real way with children. He really was one of my heros. However, tragically in 1988 he was killed in a car accident at the age of 38. This song always remind me of him.

Another song by a band that is often considered by many as a band for the teeny boppers of the the 70s. Yet Abba wrote some very interesting songs with very interesting lyrics and here is another song from their collection which is possibly exploring in music the increasing tensions that were developing between Frida, Bennie, Bjorn and Agnetha as their marriages began to strain perhaps under the pressure of fame? The song is strange because in it the couples are having so much fun and look very much in love. I wonder if they ever now look back at this video and wish they could return to those days when they were so happy together?
