Covid Island Discs

During the UK restrictions caused by Covid-19, I posted each day a different song from Youtube that I particularly like. These songs are taken from the many rock and pop artists I have listened to since I was a very young child. The first and final day of Covid Island Discs span 482 days from the 21st of March 2020 to the 19th of July 2021 when all UK restrictions were finally lifted. Enjoy browsing this page for hundreds of songs I have collated on my Youtube channel Bensonium Music. Feel free to subscribe to my channel using the red Youtube button below if you want to be notified of when I release new summary videos of each completed Covid Island Disc week (this is still a very slow work in progress).

Below is a single random week playlist video which will allow you to listen to the set of seven songs that I cited that week and seven songs randomly chosen from the whole collection of songs that make up the complete catalogue. Finally, if you scroll to the bottom of this page, you will find three Youtube videos where you can enjoy many hours of continuous music as these videos contain the complete playlists from all the completed weeks.

You can also list songs by:   Artist   Publication Year   and check out these Artist Biographies

The Completed Catalogue

Week 51 Playlist Videos

Ok so this week has some very good videos. In fact these three that are worth watching from a visual point of view.

  1. All those years ago, George Harrison
  2. Good Company, Queen
  3. Thank you, Dido

I like the George Harrison video because it is like a personal memory video of his days in the Beatles. Watching it actually makes me feel a little sad knowing that the phenomenon of the Beatles can never be experienced again.

Similarly Queen's Good Company video is a compilation of all sorts of very old movie reels capturing the everyday life of English folk; from marriage to work to play. Very visually interesting to watch as it fits nicely with the lyrics of the song. I particularly like the old guy playing the ukulele

However, my vote for the best video this week goes to Dido's Thank you. Love the purple house with a suburban garden wrongly situated in the middle of what looks like a city block. Also like the way Dido moves from room to room with the camera panning through the dissected walls. Dido taking her hair dryer from the bailiff also adds a slightly comical touch to this excellent video which accompanies a really great Dido song.

A Random Week of Songs from Covid Island Discs (Week 1: 21st March 2020 — Week 69: 16th July 2021)

Day 37: Video Killed the Radio Star, Buggles (Week 6)

"I heard you on the wireless back in '52..."
"Ohwa Ohwa"

Day 102: One day more, Les Misérables (Week 15)

I fell in love with this musical in my twenties when I first saw a performance of it out doors in Sydney. It even stimulated me to read Victor Hugo's Les Misérables which is a very loooong book and is much darker than even the musical.

Day 305: Dancing to Jailhouse Rock, Elvis Presley (Week 44)

Haven't as yet had a song from the man they called the king of rock and roll so I guess a song from him is long overdue. This is probably my favourite Elvis Presley song.

Day 330: Dreamer, Supertramp (Week 48)

Time for another song from one of my all time favourite bands Supertramp. Dreamer was one of their hit songs from their Crime of the Century album and it certainly made the Aussie singles and album charts. When I listen to this song it always makes me feel a little sad because in many ways it summaries my own life. I definitely was a man with many dreams which would never be fulfilled. I do feel a much wiser course of action as a younger person is to set realistic goals so you don't set yourself up for crushing disappointment.

Day 353: Keep good company, Queen (Week 51)

This little number appeared on Queen's "Night at the Opera" album which in my view was by far their best album. I really like this little ditty as it captures the wise truth that it is very easy to lose friendships with the progression of the years. In my own life I can think of many who have travelled some of that strange road we call our life and yet are no longer walking with me. My favourite lines in this song are:

Now I'm old and puff my pipe but no one's there to see
Ponder on my the lesson of my life's insanity
Take care of those you call your own and keep good company.

The banjo in this song is also very good!

Day 403: Duelling Banjos, Glen Campbell (Week 58)

Time for some duelling banjos I feel. Well duelling banjo and a guitar. Just watch the pure skill of these two.

Day 445: Back in the USSR, The Beatles (Week 64)

So on Sunday I cited my first Beach Boys song California Girls. That song stimulated the Beatles to include a little bit of beachboy-style musing over lovely Russian woman.
